Has Facebook just unleashed a category killer? It think it might.

Warhol Perignon

I started rereading The Philosophy of Andy Warhol this morning.

It got me wondering when it was that Warhol died. Which the book blurb revealed to be 1987.

That's almost a quarter of a century ago.

Which makes me ponder why oh why Dom Perignon feel the need to release a Warhol inspied edition of their overpriced bubbles.

Ironically it's the kind of idea that Warhol would really love.

But really. What is the point and who is the target market for this stuff?

Dark side of the pitch

Working on a pitch is part ‘n parcel of life in the ad biz.

Late nights. Weekends. Stress. Arguments.

They’re all occupational hazards.

And although we complain about them (well I do) we wouldn’t want to work anywhere else.

Winning a pitch is an indescribable feeling.

There really is nothing quite like it.

Even losing a pitch can have its upsides of sorts.

Camaraderie. Team bonding. Energy. And no shortage of sorrow drowning drinks.

What is never pretty however is when an incumbent is asked to pitch to retain a piece of business and loses.

Because people end up losing their jobs.

Good people. Hard working people. People with kids, mortgages and debts hanging over their heads.

Next time you’re on the end of a big pitch win do me a favour.

Before the celebrations get out of hand take a moment to be humble.

Crack open a bottle and gather your colleagues to drink a toast to those who have lost.

Lost not just a pitch but a piece of business.

Because one day you may be one of them.

Sublime and plain bad

Finally an app that lives up to expections.

I installed Flipboard on my iPad last week and spent time playing with it while I was sick in bed.

Absolutely have to recommend it. Unlike the Inspirataur app for iPhone.

This demo video will definitely make you laugh though!

Can touch this

Whilst the iPad had no shortage of naysayers when it was first premiered by Apple it has definitely built up quite following on release.

I think it's due to just how wonderful it feels to use.

Which is why I'm not surprised to hear it is being taken up for a variety of commercial applications.

They're even making their way into the Disney Store.

Going Underground

Anyone who's ever spent time in London will know that each Tube line has its own design for the seat fabric.

And this gorgeous campaign by London Transport plays on that beautifully.

Not sure the facts featured in the headlines are particularly must read. But the fabric designs are definitely hard to resist.

So I remember the good old days when the receptionist at work gave you a small "somebody called" message if you'd been out of the office.

So you'd think their people would know a thing or two about writing for the web.

Which of course they do. And they've put all their learnings into The Yahoo Style Guide.

Released today the guide is described by Yahoo as "The Ultimate Sourcebook for Writing, Editing, and Creating Content for the Digital World.”

Thirsty hair care

A branded vending machine.

Nothing new in that. Well not if you're Coca Cola or Schweppes anyway.

But this one's branded Toni & Guy.

It's in Japan of course. And you can find it sitting outside a Toni & Guy salon in Tokyo.

Take a closer look at the pic and you'll see the machine has drinks at the top and Toni & Guy products at the bottom.

No idea why they did that. But I guess choosing hair product from a vending machine can often be thirsty work.

The original PacMan

When I was young I was mad about PacMan.

Must have put around a thousand 20c coins into PacMan consles over time.

So you can imagine how excited I was when came across these pics on the weekend.

That's Toru Iwatani the creator of PacMan and he's holding his original PacMan sketchbook.

Quite why these drawings aren't in a Nintendo museum is anyone's guess.

But I for one would definitely bid on them if they mysteriously appeared on eBay!

Enjoy a break

The decline in newspaper circulation seems to have lead to a decline in topical advertising.

Sure it's still around but it's nowhere near as common (or good) as it used to be.

Suffice to say I was very pleased to hear somebody had created an ad to capitalise on last week's record breaking marathon match at Wimbledon.

The fact that it was JWT London and KitKit pleased me even more. It was surely the ideal opportunity to crank out a Have a break ad.

A friend in London tells me this ad was ready to go within an hour of the match finishing.

Nice one JWT!.

Yep. It's an envelope.

And every time you open it you're pushing the envelope.


This door disguised as an envelope lets you into the School of Visual Arts in the USA.

Hate to be negative but personally I'd much rather a school created to foster and encourage creativity look beyond the obvious.

And give dodgy "Push the envelope" puns a very wide berth.
