Jay Z & the Grand Prix

Very little Cannes coverage here at BrandDNA because if truth be told I'm well and truly over the whole global awards thing. Gimme a proper local ad club awards any day.

Anyway one big winner to emerge in the south of France last week was Jay Z of all people. He picked up the Entertainment Grand Prix for this wonderful little film / music video about his mother and her struggles to hide her lesbianism.

Not what I'd expect to see at Cannes. And definitely not what I'd expect to see picking up a Grand Prix. But a fine little film about a much less enlightened yet funkier time.

Intrepid People

Intrepid Travel ran the classified ad above 30 years ago. It was their very first ad.

Now they've created a new ad, inspired by their first, in classified section of key Australian newspapers.

I doubt very much that the demographic for Intrepid actually read newspapers. Let alone the classified section.

But as a PR piece for the travel brand this is a lovely idea.

Come on Aussie!

Charming story by Mighty Nice in Sydney with animation by Alex Grigg.

Come on England!

Incredibly powerful idea.

Very ordinary art direction.

Headline certainly grabbed my attention though.

Crayola Beauty

The iconic crayon company I'm sure pretty much all of us played with as kids has launched Crayola Beauty.

It's a very cute line of eyeshadows, blushes, mascara etc, produced in conjunction with ASOS the fashion retailer.

The crayons (I mean products) will be exclusive to the ASOS website.

Creativity + Mac = Magic

The Apple Macintosh is the preferred computer of creative people everywhere. Always has been always will be.

Yes the Microsoft Surface might be great. And I know a lot of people who love Lenovo. But it's always been a Mac for me.

Ugly Beauty

These retro travel postcards are beautiful. Aren't they?

At least until you look a little closer.

They're by socially conscious Barcelona drinks company Ocean-52.

The campaign was created by Brooklyn agency Conquistadors.

As about their motivation for the work, creative director Mauricio Alarcon said, “Humans instinctively close their eyes to what’s not beautiful. That’s why we wanted to show the ugliest face of ocean pollution hypnotically.”

Which is exactly what these postcards do.

Beautiful film. Beautiful idea. Find out more here.

Planet Beer

This poster turned up in my Linkedin feed the other day. Really made me smile.

So I decided to do some digging and see if I could find out which beer brand it was for.

Unfortunately all a Google search revealed was that that headline was more of a meme than an ad. As there were literally dozens of t-shirts, caps, posters etc bearing the 'Save the earth' line.

Oh well. Still a lovely idea.

I just wonder how long it'll take before a socially conscious beer brand capitalises on it.

Defiant Mixtape

The Defiant Mixtape is a Guy Ritchie directed film for Beats headphones for the World Cup and I have to say I like it. I mean seriously what's not to love!?

Tasty cookies

Don't know 'bout you but I am so over websites notifying me about their use of cookies.

Especially when they tell you they use them to enhance your experience.

I mean...really?

The Drone Age

Remember how they did the Winter Olympics logo with the drones? Well now Time magazine have used the same technique to create their latest cover. This video takes you behind the scenes of its creation.

Happy birthday Liz

I honestly have no idea why we have a holiday for the Queen's birthday in Australia.

Especially when it's not even on the day of her birthday.

Anyway. I'm not complaining.

After much searching I managed to find an ad featuring Liz (or at least a look alike).

It's for Dutch newspaper Metro by Amsterdam agency Animal Farm.

Short 'n sweet look at the iconic Kikkoman soy sauce bottle which was designed by a former Buddhist monk to bring happiness.

Warp(ed) GDPR email

I have been innundated (and I do mean Innundated) with GDPR emails over the last few weeks.

Most of them went unread.

Except this one from Warp Records.

Yes I know that being sweary isn't clever. But in a seemingly endless email tsunami it actually made me laugh.

Take an airport break

Very clever idea from JWT Brazil. Wish we had these machines in Australia as I don't think I've ever taken a flight that took off on time.

Racist not drug addled

In the risk averse and highly regulated world of pharma this tweet is an absolute revelation.

It's by the makers of Ambien in response to Roseanne Barr blaiming her outrageous racist tweets on the side effects of Ambien.

Five stars from me!
