Yet another dying art
When I went to see the apprenticeship commission as a teenager Signwriter was one of the trades I considered.
I've often wondered what would have become of me if I'd chosen to pursue it.
Would I have transitioned into graphic design or typography?
Doubt it. I'd probably have ended up painting houses.
Either way with the art of signwriting in decline I wonder what has become of all those those talented craftsmen.

One of my only regrets in life is not completing my sign-writing apprenticeship with my Fathers traditional sign-writing company back in Oxford.
Ironically as you yourself pondered, I did indeed end up working at branding companies such as Interbrand and ATL ad agencies as an art director with a large focus on typography, before moving into digital in 95. I find some solace in the fact that we can apply craft to what I do on a daily basis even in the digital realm. However I do in some ways feel partly responsible for the decline that you highlight not having made the most of my opportunity.
The clip you found bought back fond memories, thank you.
There's always pin striping on Hot Rods and motorcycles...
But yeah, I think a lot of the art is being taken out of things these days as everything has to be "measurable" - do you think you'd ever see print ads like these Bally ones from Raymond Gid again: http://bit.ly/oeYzzZ bit.ly/qWnm1F
Or my favourite Roger Excoffon for Air France: http://bit.ly/mPjIel - as I tweeted Just 6 brush strokes and not a committee in sight!
