Cracking print ad for Steggles chickens by M&C Saatchi in Sydney.
Short yet very sweet copy by Tom McFarlane.
Click pic for a better look or read copy here:
This is the only time a Steggles chicken is kept in a confined space.
We have no cages, just big barns.

I feel really bummed out when I see this, because back in the day (c1998) I had a similar idea in my book. It was for a brand of free-range eggs. My lines were:
- FP print ad, pic of chicken: "This is the only time you'll see one of our hens in a space this big."
- FP print ad, yellow background: "We use dye in our ads, not our eggs."
- Supermarket trolley ad: "This trolley is the only cage our eggs are laid in."
Didn't help me get a copywriting gig.
Feeling your pain Mel.

Well...it may be a great ad. But it's still not a humane arrangement for the chickens. There's a big difference between "free range" and "cage free" as the Australian philosopher Peter Singer details in his book The Way We Eat. Those big barns are most probably filled to overflowing with chickens who probably never get to go outside. It may be marginally better than keeping them in cages. But, as Singer suggests, if this is the best we can do, maybe we shouldn't be doing it.
