Brands beat celebrities

One of the things I've noticed at work this year is the number of brands getting involved with Facebook.
Now Facebook may seem like a no brainer to you but believe me it's not.
Up until quite recently many clients have been reluctant to set up a presence there.
I suspect even more clients will say yes to Facebook when they read the latest report on social media by IAB UK.
According to the report around one in five people (20.3%) follow brands on Facebook.
That figure is a lot higher than I thought it would be.
And way higher than the 13.4% of people who follow celebrities on Facebook.
That means there's more people following brands than celebrities.
Pretty interesting don't you think?

Not surprising though.
In my mind, Facebook is all about building your own, personal brand – whether you're conscious of it or not.
Your status updates, photo albums, likes etc all say something about you.
And by liking particular brands, you inherit what they stand for too. Which might be why some brands are successful in the f/book space, while others aren't.
It's pretty interesting. I think it's interesting also to compare the way people interact with brands on facebook, vs. Twitter. for instance, i think (this is just anecdotal/instinctual belief) that people are for more likely to follow a celebrity on twitter rather than a brand. Why do you think that is ?? Why is it different from Facebook?
It is indeed interesting, Stan...although as Stef said, not that surprising. Most Facebook users who are into liking brands usually do so because these reflect their personality. You will know just by the brands these people are liking if they are sporty, intellectual or artsy, among others. Liking celebrities will not really say that much about what kind of person you are because you can be artsy and still like a tennis player.
Thanks for the post, Stan.
but out of those brands getting 'liked' on Fb how many are actually getting decent click thrus? comments? 'likes' etc - The adidas page, which has around 3mil fans, only runs at around .5% interactivity... at last check anyway..
i've been getting the feeling that most brands on facebook are already the new banner ads - no interactivity, just broadcasting shitty content and not creating any conversation, most don't even get any feedback...
you?
pop quiz. out of all the brands you 'like' on FB how many of the articles, links, etc do you click on? or even read?
To be honest Lincoln I follow very few brands on Facebook. And if I do, it is mainly for work purposes.
I follow a couple of great brand i like but mostly I dont really look at brands.
