Where are the good banners?

I am a regular visitor to Bannerblog. Even the not so good banner ads they post there have some merit.
Which is more than I can say for most of the banners I see each and every time I go online.
I never see any decent banner ads.
In fact I can't remember the last time I saw a banner ad that made me think "I wish I'd done that".
I wonder why?
As a medium online offers unparalleled opportunities.
Yet most of the ads are shit.
It's been like that since forever.
Surely it'll have to turn the corner someday. Won't it?

I totally agree. But our clients wouldn't buy off on any banner that would even remotely interest a fellow ad junkie like yourself.
Plain Jane Banners that aren't too risky are the taste toujour. Even if they only send marginal traffic to their intended destination.
You should visit some p*rn sites mate they have awesome banner ads ;-)
'digital creatives' are still just web designers. Agencies need to treat web as just another medium and have the real creatives write the ad.
I see job ads for 'creatives - digital specialist' all the time yet the body copy reads like an ad for a programer. I've never seen an ad for an above the line creative that included 'must be able to edit and colour match film. time to merge the digi department in.
There are some reasons for lack of creativity. Often the publisher has stringent requirements on file size, which means that you not just limit the programming potential but also a lot of basic aspects. This can include colour palette, resolution of images etc.
Which is why there is always some excitement when there is a good 40k ad. They are surprisingly hard to do.
