Great idea bad ad

What makes a good banner ad?

Ask a variety of people that question and you'll get a variety of answers.

If the ad above was sitting on a website you would it get your attention?

I doubt it.

Would it be able to cut through all the news or info that surrounds it on a webpage?

Again I think not.

That headline is so insipid it's not funny.

As an ad it is, I believe, a failure.

And yet it is one of the best banners I've seen in ages!

To see what I mean go and see the actual ad on Bannerblog.

Click here to go there and be sure to click on the 'click' speech bubble.

Once you're done why not pop back here and let me know what you think?

Well I spent three minutes clicking, so if that was their objective then well done!

At last a decent banner ad that's freakin funny but what on earth does it have to do with pringles and what will it achieve?

I spent 3 minutes clicking as well Zac. But only because I am a regular visitor to Bannerblog. If the ad ran on one of the many sites I visit I would never click on it. It has no cut through and the H/L isn't enticing.

It seems like a neat idea haphazardly positioned on a brand without much thought. Idea scores higher than execution.

I think it's stupid and would never have clicked on it on a web site. I only clicked it because of your post.

Need to revise my post. The is THE WORST banner ad I've ever seen. The stupid music won't stop playing, even after I closed the tab! Am going to have to shut down by browser to shut it up...I have ten open tabs and it really ticks me off to have to close all of them to get of this pesky ad. Wonder if it infected my computer with something. Very irritating. I will never eat Pringles again.

I thought it was a classic. I agree though that I would never normally click on a banner for fear of where I would end up (or no real interest in the product being advertised). I do love a good giggle though and I got that.

Thanks for sharing. Gave me a laugh though, like many others, don't think I would have been attracted to click this in the wild without your recommendation.

Perhaps the ad is intentionally ordinary to begin with. After all, we know that 99.9% of people don't click on ads anyway. It's more likely the idea here was not to create a banner ad by the definition we all know, but to create a viral piece disguised as a banner ad. A kind of "look at this crap banner that's not so crap after all". It's brilliant. It's a FMCG which is never after sales from online, and is after brand recognition with the added benefit of measurability. And since banner metrics are usually based on a view:click ratio, this one will be through the roof. Ergo, highly successful.

I have to say the link to Pringles is tenuous (apart from the obvious tin stuck on hand). But, once I got clicking I did get that "i can't believe this hasn't been done before/i wish i had of thought of this feeling". It's a shame it was wasted on this though.. I wonder how it could have been relevantly used for something else? Hmmmm...

I totally agree. Loved the ad when I saw it on Bannerblog but would not have clicked on it in normal circumstances. It's a shame people are missing out on such a funny ad because of the 1st frame.
