It ain't getting any easier

I was chatting with a young art director today who told me that their agency was going onto a 4 day week.
If you want my opinion, I think that's a good idea.
Sure everyone has to take a pay cut, but that's surely better for team spirit and moral than sacking people who are doing a perfectly good job?
When I got home I told my wife about it. She told me that a friend of hers had also gone onto a 4 day week.
Then in the B&T newsletter today I read that Ogilvy in Sydney had introduced a 9 day fortnight.
Advertising has never been an easy industry to crack.
And whether you're an aspiring creative or someone with plenty of experience this year may well be the toughest ever.
I'd really love to hear how you see this year panning out.

Are salaries reduced in line with the working week of 4 days (or a 9 day fortnight)? I guess overall it's a great idea - much better than cutting a select group of people for sure.
It's an interesting move but what springs to my mind is what day do they cut?
When you think about it from a business perspective that is a normal business day that they are closed for so anyone who calls on that day won't get through and could therefore be dissatisfied with the company for failing to provide what has previously been a core element of any firm to be able to be reached on any business day.
That being said I'm not against the idea of keeping everyone on I'm simply questioning its effectiveness from the company level.
As far as I'm aware Tannie, staff work 4 days, not the agency. So the company is open 5 days with staff taking staggered days off.
I wouldn't mind getting some surfing in each week
I think it's a great idea but when I caluculate living on 4/5 of my current salary it doesn't sit so well...
What I'd be more open to is a year without a 'holiday' and instead doing the 9 day fortnight thing for twenty fortnights (hence using my annual leave to give me a long weekend every second week and not having to sacfrifice any pay for it).
This article makes for a very sobering read.

what i'd like to know is would the agency still expect you to do in 4 days what you'd normally do in 5?
if so, i can't imagine anything worse for staff morale.
re: "what i'd like to know is would the agency still expect you to do in 4 days what you'd normally do in 5?"
probably not, since the reason they would need to cut hours is probably because they do not have enough work coming in to afford to pay all employees to be there all that time, hence not 5 days worth of work.
if they had the same amount of as they did when everyone worked 5 days, they wouldnt be cutting hours.
sorry for explaining that twice but i wasnt sure i clearly expressed what i was thinking . . .
