Who doesn't like the beaver?

This was the most complained about ad on Australian TV in 2008.

Yet when it was shown on the Gruen Transfer it got rapturous applause from the audience and strong support from the show's panelists.

Luckily the Advertising Standards Boards kinda liked it too and all complaints were dismissed.

That score again:

Common Sense One - Wowsers Nil.

Beaver Eh.
I just dont think Advertising peeps quite 'GET it' when it comes to the special chick products!
Beavers and guitar playing with ugly patterns flying around - huh?

Gimme a cute kitten playing with the string every time! (Oh, I couldn't tell you what BRAND it was for - but the kitten was cute!)

i love that ad. and i can't tell you how many chicks had no idea what the fuck the beaver was all about. apparently a large proportion of the wowsers and moaners were men. hmm.

i like that score too: common sense: 1, wowsers 0.

I love the score line too. Sadly an all too rare win for common sense.

What is the ad for? What kind of product?

I take it that "beaver" means the same thing in Australian slang as it does in American slang?

I've often wondered if the original idea for this was a pussy and they had to 'tone' it down a little.

A beaver beats a beaker filled with blue water anytime.

Thank goodness the beaver wasn't wrapped up in a pristine white bikini and cartwheeling on the beach.

The smug little beaver looks like an architect if you ask me.

Never quite been sure what to make of this one.

Pros: very different for category, miles better than the previous stuff that brand has done, gets a laugh

Cons: Massive pun, idea has been done before (Bonds ad that Furby did with various spherical objects bashing into each other and the line 'you only get one pair, look after them')

I think we'd all be interested to know the genders of the creative team. Someone raised the 'pussy' thing - if the ad had a cat in it it wouldn't have lasted more than a couple of days. Women hate the word pussy. It's like 'panties' - as a guy I love it but chicks can't stand it. Beaver is funnier and more playful as opposed to sexual.

Having said that my old man worked in advertising and I remember him telling me a story about back in the day when a pad brief came into the agency. In those days every brief had a project name. In the interests of really understanding the consumer it was decided that everyone working on the project should be female despite the fact the workplace was very male dominated. The project name the girls came back with? 'Project Manhole Cover'. I'm not sure what my point is. Either girls aren't as precious as we might think they are or - more likely i think - almost all creatives, whatever their gender, have a bit of a deviant streak and a slightly sick sense of humour. That's all I have to say on the matter. If you don't like it you can shove it up your...
