Breaking taboos

Last night I watched the dvd of Secret Diary of a Callgirl. Pretty raunchy for a TV show.

When I was talking about it at work today one of the girls remarked that there are very few things you can't do in public.

She meant on TV but said public by mistake. Really made me laugh.

She does have a point though.

One thing I thought I'd never see done in public is design.

Now it seems even that taboo has been broken.

And Iain Tait tells me it will be broken again at Cut & Paste in London in April.

It's a design-off basically. In front of an audience.

Designers get a brief. A time limit. And away they go.

Love to see something like this happen in Melbourne. Perhaps at this year's AGDA Ideas?

Here's a video of a previous event. Looks like fun.

Some friends of mine host a regular night in Manchester called Sketch City. And it's pretty much Design in Public.

Some excellent artists from all over the world have been involved, they basically hire a venue and for a small price give people the canvass, pens, spray etc in order to do their stuff.

(sorry if I've told you about this before, can't remember!)

Back in the 90s, I once had an idea to put a design studio in a high-traffic area -- like they do with broadcast sets in Times Square these days. But watching sausage get made isn't great entertainment -- not live anyway. Probably would make a great reality TV show though. Needs editing to hit the dramatic highlights.

Is there time allowed for leafing through design books and magazines for 'inspiration'?

Hey Stan, a similar event was organised in Brisbane last year. I didn't go - next time! Link: http://www.marklobo.com.au/news/2008/07/18/designer-fight-club-the-zoo/

Each year at the Design Indaba in Cape Town they host an event like this where some big shot design or ad guy (speaking at the event) faces off against another. Results usually a bit disappointing - perhaps due to David McGregors' comment?
