Bill Bernbach would never have let this ad out of the building.
Can't say Helmut Krone would have given it his blessing either.
What on earth is it trying to say?
And what is it trying to sell?
Could it be this ad is too clever for a humble working class lad like myself?
Somehow I doubt it.
Time for the creatives at DDB Barcelona to go to the library and find themselves a copy of this book or this one me thinks.

Is it an ad for a Combi or some other type of camper van?
If it is, why choose California?
Odd. Very odd.
My only guess is it's saying, "Look at all the shit you can fit in a mysterious upcoming model." Perhaps a teaser?
But they took a stock photo of the desert and stuck an ocean in the background. There is no beach in California like that, I don't think.
I just followed the first book link. I have a copy of Remember Those Great VW Ads. It is genius. But did you see the price on Amazon? Nearly $150 US dollars!
I'll take better care of mine from now on. One of the coolest features of the book is that the hard cover under the dust jacket is embossed with the cover image like an old matt (or was it a stereo) - you remember the paper mache precurser to bromides. What? You don't know what a bromide is?
I recommend reading old VW ads to anyone who says they want to be in advertising. Though I can;t remember when anyone ever asked me how you become a copywriter.
Copy? What is that?
I've had the VW book for ages David. I got told off for putting it on the Uni reading list because it wasn't available. Not available!
It is, in my opinion, an absolute must read for any aspiring copywriter. Hell I pinched an idea from it as recently as last week!
