Ad free zone

There was much chatter out in the Blogosphere a few months back about the ban on outdoor advertising in Sao Paolo.

Now whilst I'd be one of the first people to say there is too much advertising, especially outdoor, I'm starting to wonder what our cities would be like if we banned it.

Here's a link to a fantastic Flickr set of pictures taken in Sao Paolo after the ad ban.

This vibrant city looks sad and unloved.

Perhaps rather than banning we need tighter regulation.

Click here to check out Sao Paolo's lack of ads and let me know what you think.

Thanx to Rick for the link.

sad? are you kidding? i saw that beautiful flickr set and got excited! it's not that it's missing ads, it's just missing colour.

can you imagine if, for every empty billboard, every set up uplights waiting for an image, every star outline, they commissioned an artist?? or spent some more time thinking about architectural colour...

i hope that's what they're thinking about, 'cos it's going to be amazing if they are.

I Live in São Paulo, and i can say that the city is much better now.

This Flickr set is very tendencious, because after that law, some of the billboards stay where they are, just like the flickr set, but, day by day, the outdoor space is getting clear.
