E-Sports in Korea

It took me a while to warm to Tyler Brule's Monocle magazine, but half a dozen issues in I'm hooked.

Last issue they had a brilliant article on mobile comms in Korea. It is a must read if you want to see what we'll be doing with our phones a couple of years from now.

Super fast broadband and electronics generally are currently booming in Korea. And one of the by-products of this is the rise of professional computer gaming.

In fact they have their own TV network, Ongamenet, where gamers do battle in stadiums and arenas.

Click here for a great little Monocle video on the Korean pro-gaming phenomenon.

Forget India and China. I reckon South Korea is the most rapidly emerging new superpower.

Hey Stan - not posted here before but I check your blog a lot. It's always a pleasure!

Glad you've mentioned Monocle. I have a distinct love hate relationship with the magazine! Some of the articles I don't know if I love for being interesting or whether my opinion is being skewed by the thick paper, broadsheet typeface and maps of the locations of the jetsetting writers.

The article you mentioned on South Korea I thought was quite 'topline', and for a fiver (over here in the UK) I left the article expecting a bit more I guess.

But then in the most recent issue, there's something about the top 20 cities in the world which is genuinely an interesting read.

Having said all that, I think I've bought each issue :)

Thanx for the comment Dan.

I know exactly what you mean about Monocle. I guess I found the Korean piece so interesting because I know so little about Korea.

As for the top 20 cities, I was dissapointed by that. Felt a bit to Wallpaperesque to me.
