Going viral ain't easy

If there's one expression the social media gurus love to sprout it's 'you can't create a viral video.'

Of course we all know that. At least I think we do!

Well according to recents stats released by YouTube it's harder than you might think to get a video to actually go viral.

Which should not come as a surprise given 20 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube every minute.

Look at these stats:

A video has a 3.1% chance of getting over 1000 views.

0.3 percent chance of getting over 10,000 views.

And 0.001% of getting over 100,000 views.

Of course agencies that create videos that they wish to go viral use seeding and social tools to get people to watch and share their video.

But based on the stats above you'd have to say that the chances of getting a video to go truly viral must be getting harder and harder.

A film about Heroine

Never thought I'd see the day where the launch of a typeface necessitated a promotional film. Kinda cool though. Don't you think?

More info on Heroine here.

Anyone seen Johnnie?

I'd heard good things about the six minute video doing the rounds for Johnnie Walker whiskey.

It features, or so I've heard, a wonderful storytelling performance from Scottish actor Robert Carlyle.

Sadly when I went looking for the video all I could find was a blank screen where the video used to be.

For some unexplainable reason the agency behind it was not keen for it to be shared.

Weird. Very weird indeed.

Anyone have any idea why BBH would do such a thing?

Forty years ago

In the year that man first walked on the moon the internet as we know wasn't even so much as a dream. Or was it?

Visual mixology

Brian Eno has been playing with the idea of generative music for many years.

This is a wonderful example of it using YouTube videos.

It was created by Darren Solomon.

Click here to give it a try. You will not be disappointed.

Apollo 11 - 2009 Remix

My art director and I spent ages looking at photos from the Apollo 11 mission yesterday.

We could not get over how DIY the spaceship looked. As if it was made from sheets of aluminium pop riveted together.

We also learnt that the computing power that took man to the moon was not much more than my Macbook.

So you can imagine how much we laughed when we came across this video. Classic!

Post it to video

I am a major user of Post-it Notes.

I have them stuck on my computers at work and home. I have them stuck on my desk and office window. And I even have one currently stuck on my wallet.

So as you can imagine I love this quirky little video by Savannah College of Art and Design student Bang-yao Liu.

Apparently it took him 3 months to plan and 4 days to shoot. And he used an incredible 6,000 Post-its!
