My ad of the week

OK it may not be your idea of a great ad.
But it's certainly is mine. Go Sainters!

More crazy Japanese stuff

No idea what this ad is about. But ya gotta love the crazy ideas that Japanese agencies are able to get their clients to approve.

Put them away Pammy

When I see ads like this I have to pinch myself to ensure that I haven't gone back in time.

Honestly what on earth were the people from Crazy Domains thinking!?

And as much as I am a defender of freedom of speech I am more than happy to hear that the Australian Advertising Standards Bureau has banned this ad from our televisions.

Although I suspect it will now spread like wildfire across the internet.

As you can imagine the boss of Crazy Domains can't understand all the fuss and has pointed an accusatory finger at ‘feminist bloggers’. Classic!

Starwalking Tuna

I am one of those people who really doesn't understand the enduring popularity and appeal of Star Wars.

I am a big fan of tuna though. And Japan.

So this ad ticks two out of my three success boxes!

Bonds Hipsters turn 10

I'm not exactly sure what my idea of a dream job would be, but going on this shoot would certainly be up there.

Get what's yours!!!

We get more than our fair share of dodgy "Car City" meets "Fussy Furniture" style ads on Australian TV. But I don't think we have anything quite like Berger & Green. I'm surprised they don't have a tagline that says Explosions-R-Us.

Dozens of channels but nothing on

Last night I was a guest on the RRR radio show The Enthusiast.

One of the campaigns that they were keen to discuss with me was the new campaign for the Trading Post.

Although I was familiar with the outdoor I had not seen the TV ad.

They also asked me about a controversial KFC ad but I hadn’t seen that either.

Truth be told I can’t remember the last time I watched a show interrupted by advertising.

Yet I have watched a hell of a lot of TV shows over the summer.

Madmen series 3. Gavin & Stacey series 3. Breaking Bad series 1 and 2. As well as both series of True Blood.

I occasionally catch the late night news on Ch 10. But that’s pretty much it for me as far as traditional TV watching goes.

What about you? Have your viewing habits changed in recent times?

Nippon nuttiness

As those of you who know me know I love Japan. I'd live there if I could. It's just such an amazing place for so many reasons. Sadly TV advertising isn't one of them.

Tarrantino in Japan

Two great yet totally mental ads posted in the same day.

First up the jazz playing hamsters.

Now this one. It's got Tarrantino a talking dog and it's Japanese.

What's not to love?

Classic ad of the month

I know cigarettes are bad for you but how beautiful is this ad?

Great music. Wonderful art direction.

Classic creative thinking from the legendary CDP in London.

Hard to believe it's 30 years old!

Apple v Microsoft

Interesting comparison of the advertising of Apple and Microsoft.
Well worth five minutes of your time I think.

Naughty or not?

I know very little about Islam or its traditions but I would have thought that perving on a half naked woman before she puts on her Burqa is wrong.

Which either makes this a very naughty ad or a highly offensive one.

What do you think?

Kids or children?

Two years ago I got my then 10 year old son Max to help out on a campaign I was working on.

The product we were marketing was for teenage boys and our medium was the online kids world Habbo Hotel.

Max took one look at the brief and said we should turn it upside down.

When I asked him what he meant he explained that the minor prizes in the promo would be way more interesting to kids than the main prize.

I took his advice and the campaign went on to be the most successful ever run on Habbo Hotel in Australia.

Now EA Games has gone one better (in theory) and put a 12 year old in charge of their latest TV spot for the Nintendo Spore Hero game.

I say in theory because I just saw the ad and it looks like it was written by a couple of suits.

So I showed the ad to Max (who's now almost 13) and he said it looked like a little kids ad for a little kids game.

Guess some kids are just a bit more switched on than others.

Best job but not best ad

The Queensland Tourism Best job in the world campaign is one of the most talked about ideas of the last year.

It was created by Cummins in Brisbane.

Recently it was announced that the account had been put out for pitch and that Cummins had not retained the business.

The winners of the pitch created this ad - Make of it what you will.

Brad dines out

I don't know how much Brad Pitt got paid for this ad for Japanese telco Softbank but I really don't think he was worth the money. Do you?

Jordan lights up Gatorade

Absolutely love this idea for Gatorade's limited edition Michael Jordan bottle.

Yet you hardly get to see how clever this idea is as the key visual lasts for only a matter of seconds.

I'd imagine there's a 90 sec version of this ad for cinema purposes. If not this is a waste of a great idea.

Love those racey shapes

I can't ever see myself buying this product. And on a personal level I have real issues with the Bonds brand. But so what! This is a damn cute little ad.
