Support the kids

Those enterprising young folks from Junior are hosting a screening of the film Art & Copy next month. Great to see the kids getting out doing this sort of stuff.

The film had a blink and you've missed it screening during last year's Melbourne Film Festival. And from what I understand it's headed straight to dvd in Australia.

So this is a very rare chance to see seminal adland figures like Lee Clow and Dan Weiden talk about their amazing work up on the big screen.

Tix are a paltry $17 and you can find out more over on the Junior website.

Tenacity, tenacity & tenacity

Laura Davies & Mark Lees are a young creative team who recently graduated from college. They did a 2 week placement at Wunderman London. Which is where they made this movie. It is jam packed with pearls of wisdom from my colleagues in Camden.

Junior Presentation

These are the visuals that accompanied my talk at Junior last night. Obviously not quite the same without my dulcet tones and yarn spinning but still a pretty good read I think.

We'll be back ... Eventually

I gave a talk last night to a bunch of young creative hopefuls at Junior.

The preso was very well received so I thought I'd share it with you via Slideshare.

Except Slideshare was down for maintenance.

No problem with that.

But I do have a problem with one of the worst down for maintenance messages I've ever seen.

Back after some time!!!

Honestly is that the best they could do?

Show me the money!

If you're trying to kickstart your career as a creative please set aside 3 minutes of your time to watch this video.

It may well be the best career move you make.

Why?

Because it may make you think twice about working on something on spec.

And why is that important to a person at the beginning of their career?

Because once you start giving away your intellectual property it will get harder and harder for you to demand that people pay you what you and your ideas are worth.

Free may be the most popular word in the English language but it isn't the smartest.

After all why would anyone want to pay you when they know that you're happy to do it for nothing?

Inspiration and opportunity

The boys from Junior have put together a great resource for aspiring creative types.

Their website and monthly talks are a terrific source of advice and inspiration.

But as anyone who works as a creative will tell you – jobs are not easy to come by.

Which is why I’m such a fan of the V-Raw program.

It gives young wannabes the chance to secure a foot in the door at all sorts of creative businesses.

The good news is V-Raw will be running again this year.

With internships to be won at the likes of Diesel, Lifelounge and the Glue Society.

As you can imagine competition for these internships is going to be fierce. Really fierce.

But if you think you’ve got what it takes click here and go get involved.

And if you’re looking for some inspiration why not pop down to tonight’s Junior event at Seamstress.

Must try harder

Younger visitors to Brand DNA are sure to be aware of the Monday Morning Whip that I write each week for Junior.

One of the topics I try to ram home is the realisation that getting a job in adland requires more than just a good folio.

I took the picture above yesterday.

Every single one of those folios belongs to a talented young creative person trying to get a foot in the door at an agency.

Do I need to say more?

Updated advice?

Great to see this popular book on putting a book together has been updated for the 21st century.

Although why it's still focused on 'the book' is anybody's guess.

In the digital age there should be a so much more to a folio than just ads in a book.
