Spike Jonze BTS

Hot on the heels of the Isle Of Dogs behind the scenes film comes this beauty looking at the recent Spike Jonze ad for the Apple HomePod. You could learn a lot from watching a short film like this.

What a great job ad!

Behind the Isles of Dogs

The new Wes Anderson film look great. Mind you they generally do. But behind the scenes glimpse at the animation process is compulsive viewing. Well worth 2 or 3 minutes out of your day.

Netflix new font

I was surprised to hear that Netflix had developed their own font in conjunction with foundry Dalton Maag.

But when I did a bit of research it quickly became clear why they've done it.

Cost.

Font licensing can be expensive, especially when you make as much stuff as Netflix. So a custom typeface makes sense.

“Developing this typeface not only created an ownable and unique element for the brand’s aesthetic," says Netflix brand design lead Noah Nathan, "but saves the company millions of dollars a year as foundries move towards impression-based licensing for their typefaces in many digital advertising spaces.”

Regardless of all that. It's a nice typeface. End of story.

Ad or Slide?

Is this a poster or a powerpoint slide?

Looks like a poster.

But looks a helluva lot more like a powerpoint slide.

Come on Aussie!

This my friends is how you do content.

Truth be told I hate the term content but let's use it for now.

The dad is brilliant. The daughter inspiring. And the Australian Football league really should be commended for making genuinely moving films like this.

Hell I confess it brought a tear to the eye.

There are three films in the series. Here are links to the second and third.

Truly magical work from Clemenger here in Melbs.

Nice bit of real estate

This made me smile. Quite a bit actually.

I assume the guy on the ladder is part of the ad?

Because if the creative team happened to be passing with a camera at the exact moment a punter climbed up a ladder to tear off the phone info then it suddenly smells a touch scammy.

Oh fuck it! I really need to stop over thinking and just enjoy the fun.

Nike goes Catalan

Let's be honest any ad featuring Nike and Barcelona is going to be good. That much is a given.

And this new spot by W+K Amsterdam definitely lives up to expectations.

What makes so special (to me at least) is it's in Catalan.

Anyone who knows anything about Spanish history knows this is a big deal.

So kudos to W+K for the added authenticity.

Chalk & Cheese

Stole this pic from Glenn's Instagram.

The ad on the left is from the bumbling bureaucracy we know as the NBN.

They're the people currently running years behind schedule rolling out one of the world's worst broadband networks.

Like the NBN the ad is all talk, big words and empty platitudes.

Now compare that to the ad on the right from the Australian Union Movement.

Blunt. Pithy. And not a word of explanatory body copy required.

Perhaps we should put the unions in charge of the broadband rollout!

Power of words

I can take a good photo but I'd never call myself a photographer.

I have a good eye but would never consider myself an art director.

And even though I won awards for writing I think most people can write better than I can.

Which is what makes me a good creative director.

And being a good story teller helps me make ideas happen.

Which is why words are my favourite visuals.

A man like you

This is a lovely little film for shaving brand Harry's. It's summed up beautifully by this YouTube comment:

"This commercial wins. It's honestly the best commercial I have ever seen. It has trailer quality production with a deep message and hits you right in the feels. I even swore at Harry's for how it made me tear at the end, but I immediately applauded them for their unique approach and superb delivery. Well done. 10/10."

Cost of Colour

Colour forecasting is big business. Actually make that huge business.

And there's a helluva lot more to it than you might imagine.

So grab yourself a coffee and put aside 5 mins to read all about it in this fascinating piece from the New York Times.

Spike Jonze & Apple

For some time now Apple ads have been little more than a cool track and funky design or choreography. Now they applied some steroids to the formula by putting Spike Jonze in the directors' chair and FKA Twigs in front of camera.

Friday Funny

Who could resist?

This has to be the most irresistible offer ever to grace a packet of biscuits.

Forget your buy get one free.

Forget now with 20% more.

Hell even half price pails in comparison.

But I wonder if anyone has actually opened their web browser and taken a look?

#NormalizeBreastfeeding

An intimate moment between mother and child.

The most natural thing in the world.

Captured beautifully and shared by Gap via their Instagram.

Pretty brave move if you ask me. especially by a 'wholesome' brand.

But a necessary one.

Great to see they used a non-white mum too.

Well done to everyone involved at Gap!

Well done Club Med

Popular packaged holiday brand Club Med has decided to pull their planned advertising from the Daily Mail in response to a bigoted article about a gay athlete and their partner becoming parents.

A Club Med spokesperson said the "article goes against our brand values, which welcome all families."

Fingers crossed we'll see more brands taking a stand like this. And hopefully a less bigoted media.
