Social up in lights

Another artist commenting on the anti social nature of social media.

This time it's Mike Campau whose work (like social media itself) seems bright and colourful but is actually quite dark.

Still made me smile though!

Apprentice Type

Colour. I love it. But sometimes it's nice to use simple black and white. This is a great little film about some really rather good typography. Enjoy!

Late night burgers

Marshall Mcluhan once said that the medium is the message.

This poster takes that a step further. Well kinda.

The lamps that light the medium make the message.

Or something like that!

FKC Me!

Remember as a kid when your mum said that using swear words wasn't big or clever?

Might be time to tell her you've found an exception to that rule.

Software Exists?

I pinched this pic from Russell Davies.

It caught me eye because as someone who works in a tech company I am very aware of the importance of UX.

Especially writing for UX.

I suspect whoever created the notification isn't.

Because 'software exists' is a seriously odd (and unfriendly) turn of phrase.

Common Bond

I can't work out if this is a piss take or an actual ad. Either way it's so bad it's verging on brilliant. Unless you're a vegan. Obviously.

Tone of voice

The world of make-up and cosmetics is alien to me.

But my daughter works for Sephora. So she knows her stuff.

And she was telling me about a brand called Glossier.

Now like I said, I'm no expert, but I reckon the copy above has a terrific tone of voice.

"Skin first. Make-up second. Smile always."

Great advice. Especially for young girls.

And I really like the use of emojis too. Which is not an area many brands can play in.

Legacy of Bernbach

"Let us prove to the world that good taste, good art, good writing, can be good selling."

Justice 4 Grenfell

It's been 8 months since the horrific fire at the Grenfell Tower.

And like many other appalling matters of injustice it's dropped off the news radar.

So the Justice4Grenfell collective took a leaf out of the book of the film 3 Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri.

71 people died in the Grenfell Tower tragedy. Yet not one person has been arrested. Not one!

Hundreds of survivors are homeless. And still there is no justice.

Haxley & Field Notes

I'm a big fan of the Field Notes brand. I'm sure you probably are too.

These new ones with illustrations by Jay Ryan are particularly charming.

In fact a set are currently in the post on their way to my home!

This lovely little film is sure to make you fall in love with them too.

Stopping traffic

Not what I want to see on the back of a bus. Ever.

Maybe it's because I'm a Londoner

Utter brilliance from the team at W+K. What really makes this special is it absolutely reeks of 21st century London life. A London so far removed from the one my dad grew up in that I honestly can't believe that the UK voted Yes to Brexit.

It's just not on #2

If you turn a blind eye. If you don't say anything. And if you don't think this is wrong. Well what do I say?

Old school copywriting

I know. I know. They don't make ads like this any more.

And they certainly don't write copy anywhere near as good.

Blame the rise of digital. Blame SEO and key words. Blame millennials. Blame conservative clients.

You can blame whoever you want to be honest.

Why?

Because this ad is quite recent. It's one of a handful produced for the 60th birthday of what we in Australia call the Kombi.

Kudos to all involved at DDB Paris. And of course a huge pat on the back to the client who signed it off.

TIP: Try clicking the pic to enlarge the copy.

It's just not on

Couple of very high profile adland figures departed their agencies last week. I think we all know why even if we don't know the whole story. When are men going to realise that kinda shit just won't wash in 2018?

Very hungry actually

A full colour vinyl banner.

Yeah. Ummmm.....

I'm still hungry.

Higher Fidelity

Absolute classic from the golden age of British advertising.

Can't imagine Bose or Sonos running something as clever as this.

The 'Higher-Fi' tagline is brilliant.

Lovely copywriting too!

"They'll rock your ear drums. They'll break your bank. But they'll never lay a hand on your furniture."

Dog Tested

No idea why there are dogs driving or wash the car in this new Subaru spot from the US.

But who the hell cares. I love it!
