Can you add a few more syllables?

These days it seems that everyone with a keyboard thinks they can write.

A couple of times last month I had to deal with the comment that something I had written was too simple.

“We need more detail.” “It’s too friendly.” “It’s so simple, I don’t know what to make of it.”

It’s the curse of the copywriter.

I recently came across a great quote in an Economist article on post modernism that perfectly sums up this mentality.

According the Economist piece, writing impenetrable prose was a necessity for Foucault and his fellow post modernists, if they were to be taken seriously.

Wow! It seems the copywriting critics are not short sighted philistines, they’re post modernists.

Who’d have thought?
